There are basically two types of circle skirt patterns.

One is cut from "C" shaped pieces. The result is more like a donut. This means there is not a lot of extra fabric around gathered up and creating bulk around your waist.

The other way to make a circle skirt is the use the full width of the fabric. You gather or pleat one side of the length of the fabric, basically folding it until it becomes the size of your waist. The other end is un-gathered and that is the bottom edge or hem of the skirt. This is the using a rectangular pattern and sewing it into a tube, gathered at the waist.

Both can be great, but when trying to avoid extra bulk at the waist so that the skirt doesn't make your waist look bigger, many times it's best to go with the "C" shaped pattern pieces, creating a big circle with a hole cut out of the middle for the waist. Think of a classic 50's poodle skirt. Those were usually flat pancake shapes with a hole the size of the waist cut out of the middle. A ballerina's tutu is an example of long straight strips of rectangular fabric gathered at one end; at the waist.

When you make the C shape, you can also add just a little extra fabric for gathering at the waist. You still have C shaped pattern pieces, but you have added just a little soft gathering at the waist rather than merely cutting a hole in the center of the circle the same size as the waist.

We have shown examples here for both techniques of making of circle skirts, with variations.

So here are the types of circle skirts available at the moment :

1. C shape skirt with some gathering

2. C shape skirt with no gathering at the waist (The most flattering and easiest to wear) Like the brown and green petal bust dress beside)

3. Rectangle shape skirt with lots of gathering (similar to a "dyrndl" skirt; the least easy to wear/ least flattering usually)

4. Box pleat skirt, but this type right now is only available as part of the wing bust dress.
